Initiated during my residency at Oroko Radio (a youth-led internet radio based in West-Africa), “Dream The Spirit Free” is a sonic project that combines original recordings, found material, and abstract musical compositions to explore memory and community while confronting Nigeria’s history of institutionalized inequality.
The fifth instalment of “Dream The Spirit Free” explores the ambiguity of divine benevolence in Igbo spirituality. With references from the 2003 movie, “Egg of Life”, this edition of “Dream The Spirit Free” considers the place of community in repelling evil.
The third instalment which was broadcast on Democracy Day (June 12) features extracts from the “Oputa Panel”. Initiated by President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Oputa Panel investigated human rights violations during the military rule of 1984 to 1999 in a bid to seek reconciliation and justice. As Nigerians celebrate the restoration of democratic rule, still, we dream of a government that will truly work for the collective good.
Made as a collaborative project providing virtual support rooted in a sonic community to those who may be dealing with bad times, “Gently Open The World” invited people all over the world to share with all of us songs that remind them of hope, songs that have walked with them through difficult times so we can share in the comfort they found.
The first edition of “Gently Open The World” was broadcast on Oroko Radio in 2023 with a second edition on Refuge Worldwide, Berlin in 2024.
